February 4,
2004--A Rasmussen Reports survey found that 64% of Americans believe that
the Super Bowl Halftime show was inappropriate even before Janet
Jackson's breast was revealed to the worldwide audience.
Only 17% of American adults disagreed and said
the show was appropriate while 19% were not sure.
Among those who attend religious services on
a regular basis, 76% said that the show was inappropriate while only 8%
disagreed.
Fifty-four percent (54%) of those who attend
services rarely or occasionally thought the show was inappropriate as well.
Among non-churchgoers, 29% disagreed and thought the show was acceptable.
Fifty percent (50%) believe that the FCC
should fine "CBS, MTV, and others involved in producing and broadcasting the
halftime show." Republicans, by a
3-to-1 margin (60% to 22%), believe fines should be issued. Democrats are
evenly divided on the question (42% favor fines, 37% oppose them).
Only 10% believe the event was an accident while
82% say it was planned. Sixty-three
percent (63%) of Americans have followed news stories concerning the
halftime show closely or very closely.
The NFL has indicated that MTV will not be allowed to produce Super Bowl
Halftime shows in the future.
The national telephone survey of 500 adults was conducted by Rasmussen
Reports on February 3, 2004. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5
percentage points, with a 95% level of confidence. |
